Ex-prime minister of Thailand and wife jumps bail
Thaksin Shinawatra, formerly the prime minister of Thailand, and his wife was granted permission, by the Thaia court to attend the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing, China via posting a $385,000 bond. They failed to return Sunday night and missed appearing in court Monday morning. The couple has forfeited the bond and an arrest warrant has been issued. They have been charged with a variety of crimes, i.e., corruption in land deals, tax fraud and a irregularities in a state operated lottery to fund education to name a few. Mr. and Mrs. Shinawatra had been in and out of exile to avoid prosecution earlier this year. They are popular among the rural poor in Thailand. |
