Food Preseervatives
Food has definitely changed from the time I can remember. Fish genes in tomatoes to teach the tomato not to require much water to grow and cloned cows are just two examples. Finding a tomato with a blemish is what I shop for these days. I remember a teacher in middle school telling the science class that we are at a baseball game; we had a hot dog with ketchup sup, mustard, and pickles, a pop and some chips. He then asked, "How many preservatives did we consume?" The majority of the class shouted 4 or 5 - we collectively agreed counting items, pop, chips, hot dog and hot dog bun - we were dismayed to learn ketchup, mustard and pickles also were preserved. Our teacher went on to explain that different food manufacturers preferred different types of preservatives to either save money or preserve the look of package food to please eye appeal to the consumer. At that time I was a picky eater; however, to date - I am glad what I had to pick over, was grown in our family garden. My children grew up on a combination of store packaged food items and farm grown items. I am personally glad I have in-laws and relatives, that still keep gardens. They are quit generous in sharing what there bounty. Visitors only have to bring their own containers and crop the vegetable themselves. |
