Jimi Hendrix set band earnings standard
Millions overwhelmed the highway, traveling to the 1969 three-day Woodstock Festival in New York. Tens of thousands of tickets sold; drew too many people, the fee was changed from $18.00 to free. Local law enforcement found it impossible to control the crowd of attendees; however, the hippi mentality [peace and love] was not violent which made the event self-manageable. Many bands like the Greatful Dead and artists like Janis Joplin musical careers were propelled by music films that were recorded at the 1969 three-day festival. This community of rockers help lunch careers for artists like Melanie Safka. Jimi Hendrix was the highest paid performer, earning $18,000. His earnings set the standard for bands to to refuse to perform for less than $10,000. Woodstock changed attitudes toward pop culture and rock music. |
