Mayor Shirley Franklin ~ 1st African American Female Mayor of Atlanta, GA

Shirley Clarke Franklin, born May 10, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; attended Philadelphia’s Girls School; earned B.A. in sociology from Howard University and M.A., also in sociology, from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to Ms. Franklin's bid to become the mayor of Atlanta, she had served with two prior Atlanta Mayors; Former Mayor Andrew Young , 55th Mayor of Atlanta (1982 - 1990) as Chief Administrative Officer and City Manager and as the Commissioner of Cultural Affairs under former Mayor Maynard Jackson ; who was the first African American Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia (served three terms 1974-78; 1979-82 and 1990-1994). Shirley Clarke Franklin was inaugrated as the 58th Mayor of Atlanta on January 7, 2001, succeeding former Mayor Bill Campbell as Atlanta's first African American female mayor. |
