Vietnam ~ Tourist Attraction?
Vietnam was soaked with Agent Orange, (powerful herbicide used by the USA in conflict campaign that destroyed all that grew from the soil, plants, trees, ...) from 1961 to 1971. During my 17 years of employment at a Veterans Hospital, speakers of all sorts visited; I distinctly remembered a speaker (sponsored by the station's nursing education department) sharing health issues in Iraq, mainly the unusual rise in lukemaia cases and disabled child ~ allegedly they were exposed to uranium. The speaker also shared census information about Vietnam, i.e., less than 7% of the population age 70+; practically no adults age 45 - 70. In other words, at the time of the info sharing (early 90s) the majority of the population, approximately 88%, was under the age of 43. I often listened to Veterans who shared horrible experiences and described the landscape after Agent Orange (sometimes referred to as the "Rainbow Plant Killer") was sprayed over the land. One of the veterans compared the effectiveness to a commercial product called "Roundup" - this product comes in a spray bottle, users can spray the chemical on weeds as soon as the Sun rises and it wilts the weed and surrounding area to death before Sun down and does not grow back. Veterans shared, that lush green forest disappeared within three days after the "Rainbow Spray" ~ others shared the chemical destroyed farmer's crops as well. I am also a Vietnam Era Veteran, we are still collectively complaining about being medically neglected ~ general medical treatment for veterans, who present themselves for treatment, is the psych ward. The inspiration for this intel came from an initial search for Vietnam tourism and a website hit ~ titled "News" ~ this site invites visitors to travel to Vietnam. The first graphic is a beautiful flower, but it is really news about a Japanese ambassador, joining local officials in planting cherry blossom trees at Da Lat resort. The site gives background information about the people; links to tour sites and services. Praise Jehovah, I was injured trying to be all I could be, during training; thus, released with an Honorable Discharge. None-the-less, I still seek signs of acknowledgement for medical upgrades for Vietnam Era Veterans and am concerned about the children of Vietnam, Solidarités Jeunesses Vietnam is a site where volunteers can help Vietnam survivors. |
