Weddings

My sixteen year old son is out of school for the summer. We talk about all sorts of subject matters concerning maturity in young people as well as adults; whether it is peer pressure; using common sense or making decisions that affects one’s future. Subject matters are inspired from his personal experiences and my own or a news report and/or published articles.

Today, I requested my son watch a portion of the Montel Williams Show. The subject theme was “Super Mom” – Robin Givens was the featured guest along with other single moms. Their discussion entailed juggling careers and managing the needs of their children. One of the single moms had the added challenge of managing the relationship of her two children who have different fathers.

The end of Montel’s show featured a married couple with two children; the eldest being a special needs child [needs 24/7 care] due to being born with debilitating spinal bifida. Their second child is healthy. The father provides well enough for his wife to be a stay at home mom. She had been an events planner prior to becoming a mother and decided to put her dream aside to personally care for the needs of her first born.

Montel’s show sponsored this mother to live her dream for a week; while her spouse took the role of Mr. Mom. After the show, my son and I talked about how the show illustrated how the life of women change when they become Mothers and the beauty of having a supportive spouse vs. one parent struggling to fill the void of an absent parent.

Several hours later, I am watching “Headline News” – the reporter mentioned a headline to come; prior to the commercial break that mentioned that young people are saying no to marriage and weddings. This inspired me to query my son for his opinion concerning weddings during the commercial break.

I interrupted his video game session and asked, “What is your opinion on weddings based on what you know today? There is not right or wrong answer, I am just curious about your opinion. Should two people, who are sure they want to spend the rest of their life together, have a wedding or just get a marriage license and start their life together.

My son responded, “Well, I think they should have a wedding if they are both virgins. They should just get the marriage license if they have been intimate with other people.”

I am so proud of His opinion. I simply shook His hand and expressed, “Your opinion is excellent.” Initially, I wanted my son to write about this conversation; however, feeling his preference to return to his game, this moment is now being shared by a proud Mother who can hardly wait to share with his father, when He returns home, later today.
